Policy Statement

At Palmer School of Excellence, we are fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children, young people, and vulnerable adults involved in our programmes. We believe that everyone, regardless of age, ability, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or identity, has the right to be protected from harm and treated with respect.

1. Purpose of This Policy

This policy outlines our approach to safeguarding, including the measures in place to protect individuals in our care, and procedures for reporting and responding to concerns.

2. Scope of the Policy

This policy applies to all staff, volunteers, coaches, contractors, and any individuals working on behalf of Palmer School of Excellence across all programmes and settings.

3. Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)

Our Designated Safeguarding Lead is responsible for managing safeguarding concerns and ensuring this policy is implemented effectively.

4. Code of Conduct

All staff and volunteers must:

- Treat all children and young people with respect and dignity.

- Act as positive role models.

- Avoid any behaviour that could be misinterpreted.

- Never use physical punishment or engage in inappropriate physical contact.

- Report all concerns, disclosures, or allegations promptly.

5. Safer Recruitment

We ensure all staff and volunteers are:

- Recruited following thorough vetting processes.

- Subject to enhanced DBS checks where applicable.

- Provided with clear role descriptions and safeguarding expectations.

- Trained in safeguarding as part of their induction.

6. Training

All staff and volunteers receive regular safeguarding training appropriate to their role, and updates in line with current legislation and best practice.

7. Recognising Abuse

Abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, sexual, and neglect. Staff and volunteers are trained to recognise signs of abuse and understand their responsibilities to act.

8. Reporting Procedures

If a child discloses abuse, or a concern is raised:

- Stay calm and listen carefully.

- Reassure the child that they have done the right thing.

- Do not promise confidentiality, explain you must report it to help them stay safe.

- Report immediately to the DSL.

- Record the concern in writing, including time, date, and any observations or direct quotes.

If a child is in immediate danger, call 999.

9. Confidentiality and Record Keeping

All safeguarding concerns will be recorded securely and confidentially. Access to records is strictly limited to the relevant safeguarding personnel and authorities.

10. Whistleblowing

Staff and volunteers are encouraged to raise concerns about poor or unsafe practices and know they will be supported if they do so in good faith.

11. Online Safety

We promote safe use of technology and social media. Staff are expected to maintain professional boundaries online, and any online interactions with children must follow our code of conduct.

12. Partnerships

We work closely with local schools, authorities, and safeguarding boards to ensure a collaborative and robust approach

to safeguarding.

13. Policy Review

This policy will be reviewed annually or in response to legislative changes.
